Doc Tate was a self-taught artist, flutist, dancer, and a Methodist lay minister. His services were commissioned by several notable institutions including the Smithsonian, the Oklahoma Diamond Jubilee, the Kennedy Center and the United Nations. He also made over twenty-five television appearances, including several on the British Broadcasting Corporation channel (BBC).
